The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have announced that their baby boy will be named George.

George was the bookmakers favourite and a popular name historically amongst the British monarchy, with baby George likely to be known as George VII when he eventually inherits the crown after Prince Charles and Prince William. Until then he will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.

It is believed that the Queen was told of the child’s name when she met him for the first time earlier today.

Social media lit up with the news of the royal baby’s name, with some like Chancellor George Osborne particularly pleased with the choice:

The young family are now staying at the Middleton home in Bucklebury, Berkshire, after spending last night in Kensington Palace.

Prince George was born on Monday at 16:24 BST weighing a healthy 8lbs 6oz (3.8kg)  at St Mary’s Hospital in London.
