Oliver Wilde - Perrett’s Brook

When someone sells something to you with comparisons to Atlas Sound and Kurt Vile, you know you’re either going to be left ecstatic or mightily underwhelmed. Fortunately, in the case of the Bristol-based Oliver Wilde, the former definitely applies.

“Perrett’s Brook”, true to those comparisons, enters with that laconic, Vile-esq drawl, circling round unsettling, butchered fragments of guitar that would make Mr Bradford Cox himself proud. We’re already sold, but then the track blossoms into a wall of sound which goes straight for the emotional jugular; it could even be Fuck Buttons at their as-yet-undiscovered tenderest depths.

Enough comparisons, though, for “Perrett’s Brook” really does sound like something special, a really heady mixture of so many incredible influences, rolled into some unique, woozy magnificence. Probably the most unexpectedly brilliant  track I’ve had the pleasure in stumbling across in a great while. So yeah, pretty ecstatic, then, and not underwhelmed at all.

The man himself has an album in the pipeline courtesy of the good folk at Howling Owl Records. Cop that here. It’ll be out in July, and according to Twitter it’s shaping up to be something special. Consult this if you need any more convincing.
