Two people have been killed and at least six more injured in a knife attack in the Finish city of Turku.

Police were called to the central Puutori market square area of the southern Finish city at around 16:40 local time (13:40 GMT) to reports of a man attacking people with a knife.

Armed police soon arrived on the scene and shot the suspect in the leg, before taking him into custody.

The public have been advised to stay away from the city centre while police search for other possible suspects.

The motive for the attack remains unclear at this stage, and Finish interior minister Paula Risikko, the said she did not yet know whether the attack was related to terrorism.

In response to the incident, Finish authorities have increased the police presence at major transport hubs and areas popular with tourists.

The stabbings come less than 24 hours after two attacks rocked Spain, with Islamic State-linked jihadists driving vans at crowds of people in Barcelona and Cambrils. Police in Spain continue to hunt for one of the drivers, who fled the scene on foot.
