Buckingham Palace has made an official complaint to the press watchdog over a frontpage story in the Sun newspaper that claims the Queen backed a UK exit from the European Union.

Quoting an anonymous sources for its “exclusive bombshell” story, the Sun claims there was a “bust-up” between the Queen and former Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg over the issue in 2011.

The story claims the Queen ‘reprimanded’ Clegg as a lunch in 2011 while he was deputy prime minister, and left “no room for doubt about her passionate feelings over Europe”.

The Palace maintains that the Queen remains “neutral” on the subject of “Brexit”, while Nick Clegg dismissed the story as “nonsense”.

The Sun, which has run several pieces supporting the “Leave” campaign, says its stands by its story and would defend itself “vigorously” against the complaint.
