Britons were treated to the rare sight of the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis last night, with members of the public from north Wales to Lancashire posting photographs of the colours lighting up the night sky on social media.

The night sky light shows reached into unexpected latitudes of both the northern and southern hemispheres thanks to a solar storm.

The Met Office says that there could another chance to see the Aurora Borealis tonight in the UK, although it may only be viewable by those in Scotland and Northern Ireland and would depend on cloud cover.
