Argentina: Reports of explosion from falling meteor in Santa Fe region

A loud, window-rattling explosion was reported in at least seven towns in central and western Santa Fe, Argentina, with scientists investigating whether the cause was a meteor.

Jorge Coghlan, director of the Astronomical Observatory of Santa Fe, said that the loud boom was caused by “a fireball that disintegrated in the atmosphere, which ended with an explosion”

In an interview on radio show De 12 a 14, Coghlan continued:

It was a pity that occurred day . If it had happened at night it could have been a wonderful light show

Authorities are yet to find any fragments of the meteor, but Coghlan said that any pieces found would likely only be the size of pebbles and noted that if a member of public found a fragment it is their legal duty to present it to a lab for examination.
