A large construction crane has collapsed in lower Manhattan, New York, killing at least one person and injuring two more.

The crane collapsed in the early hours of Friday morning in the Tribeca area, crushing a number of empty parked cars along Broadway.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud crash and feeling the ground vibrate from the impact.

Emergency services are on the scene, with road users told to expect delays on the surrounding roads and subways diverted to avoid the area. Those working in the neighbourhood have been told to avoid the area and return home.

Strong winds and snow were reported in new York, but it is unclear what caused the collapse and an investigation is underway.
