A New York man has been exonerated and freed after spending nearly 25 years in prison for a murder that he could not have committed because he was on holiday in Florida at the time.

Jonathan Fleming, 51, was convicted for the 1989 shooting of his friend Darryl Rush in Williamsburg, Brooklyn despite his pleas of innocence and evidence, such as phone records and hotel receipts, that put him in Florida at the time of the incident.

He was convicted on the testimony of a single crack-addict eye-witness, but she recanted weeks later after saying she was pressured into her statement by police, according to the NY Daily News.

However after spending nearly half his life in prison, the Kings County conviction integrity unit reviewed his case have had it dismissed, clearing him of all charges.
