British tourist Ray Cole, who had been imprisoned in Morocco after being found guilty of committing homosexual acts has been released, his son has confirmed.

Cole, 69, was on holiday in Marrakesh in September visiting a local man Jamal Jam Wald Nass, when the pair were arrested at a bus stop for suspected homosexuality, which is illegal under Moroccan law.

Both men had been sentenced to four months in jail on 2 October, after police searched Jam Wald Nass’ home and found a photograph of the pair on Cole’s mobile phone, which they used in court as “proof” of the men’s homosexuality.

Cole said he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from around the world after his son, Adrian Cole, launched an online campaign to have him released.
