Ebola is one of the world’s most deadly diseases, and West African states are struggling to contain the most recent outbreak that has killed 729 people since March.

There are approximately 1323 confirmed and suspected cases of Ebola in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced a $100 million (£595 million) emergency response to the crisis.

Ebola spread by contact with infected bodily fluids, mostly blood, and contaminated environments, and kills up to 90% of those infected. Initial flu-like symptoms lead to external haemorrhaging from orifices such as the eyes and mouth, and internal bleeding, which can lead to organ failure.

The infectious nature of the disease make it difficult to contain, and medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) have released an interactive graphic (below), showing how they prevent infections at their treatment centres.
