A bio-artist has created a living replica of Vincent van Gogh’s ear and put it on display at a German museum.
Diemut Strebe used genetic material donated by the great grandson of van Gogh’s brother to 3D print a living ear genetically similar to the one the artist is said to have cut off in 1888.
The ear is suspended is a nutritious liquid, and could survive for years in its current state.
Visitors who come to see the work, titled Sugababe, are able to speak into the ear with a microphone that is connected to a computer that simulates nerve impulses in the ear.
Sugababe is on display the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, southwest Germany, until 6 July.
