Archaeologists have reconstructed a virtual Roman gladiator school from a site discovered at the site of the Roman army camp Carnuntum on the banks of the River Danube in Austria.
In their report published in the journal Antiquity, archaeologists used aerial surveys and ground penetrating radar to find information on the school or “ludus” that rivalled the ludus maximus in Rome in scale.
Carnuntum has been excavated a number of times over the last couple of centuries, with archaeologists uncovering a civilian town and legionary fortress, but the ludus was only discovered in 2011 and was shown to have a circular training area as well as individual cells for the gladiators.
From the information gleaned from the non-invasive techniques, the researchers were able to virtually reconstruct the ludus as shown in the video above.
