A drone has captured close-up video footage of a live volcano eruption on the South Pacific island of Vanuatu.
Shaun O’Callaghan attached a GoPro camera to his DJI Phantom 2 quadcopter drone, often known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and flew it into the crater of Mount Yasur, a 361m tall active volcano according to the website DroneHire.
The heat, ash, and smoke from volcanoes have prevented traditional aircraft from flying into the craters of live volcanoes, where the lava can reach temperatures of 1,200 degrees Celsius. However, drones offer the possibility of sending video cameras into such inhospitable locations without the threat to human life.
