Pope Francis has revealed that he once worked as a bouncer in an Argentinian nightclub, a first for the head of the Catholic Church.

The 77-year-old leader described his time working the doors of a party venue Buenos Aires during a recent visit to the church of San Cirillo Alessandrino in a poorer area of Rome. He also went on to discuss his experiences of working in laboratories and sweeping floors as a teenager.

The Pope gave more details, however, about his time teaching literature and psychology, and explained to parishoners how it “taught him how to get people back into the church”.
