A Polish woman has received a suspended four-month jail sentence after killing two million bees with excessive use of anti-mosquito spray.

The woman from Gorlice, known as Joanna S, was in charge of a municipal operation to kill mosquitoes with pesticides after stagnant waters from recent flooding had caused the numbers to swell.

However, the pesticides she chose to use had not been cleared by the Ministry of Health, and sprayed them on such a large scale that she caused 38 colonies to collapse, killing around 2 million bees, and could have taken human lives.

Local beekeepers are reportedly considering making a claims for damages against the woman for deaths of the bees.
