A British sailor claims to have seen the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 flying over the Indian Ocean shortly after it disappeared from radar screens.

Katherine Tee, 41, says she saw a plane on fire in the night sky heading in the direction of Vietnam, while she was sailing from India to Phuket, Thailand.

She told the Phuket Gazette:

“I saw something that looked like a plane on fire. That’s what I thought it was. Then, I thought I must be mad… It caught my attention because I had never seen a plane with orange lights before, so I wondered what they were.

“I could see the outline of the plane, it looked longer than planes usually do. There was what appeared to be black smoke streaming from behind it.”

At sea and without news of the missing plane, she never mentioned her sighting to her husband at the time as they had been at sea together for 13 months at this point, and she didn’t want to put an extra toll on their relationship.

However, once they arrived at Phuket and found that the plane was still missing, she has now reported her sighting to the Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC), which is heading up the search for the plane.

Flight MH370, carrying 239 passengers and crew, disappeared on March 8 shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing. Previous reports of possible black box ‘pings’ 1,500km off the coast of Perth, Australia were found to be false, and authorities have yet to find any credible evidence of a location for the missing plane.
