A man has been crushed to death beneath a giant crucifix that collapsed in the village of Cevo in the Italian Alps.
The 30m high wood and concrete cross, which was dedicated to Pope John Paul II during a visit to the village in 1998, weighed 600kg and collapsed on 21-year-old Marco Gusmini during a local event.
The accident comes just days before Pope John Paul II is due to be canonised in a ceremony in Rome.
