Senior Imams and Islamic scholars around the world have written an open letter to Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi explaining that many of IS’ actions are forbidden under Islamic law and scripture.
The letter explains that the teachings Quran and Hadiths of the Prophet Mohammad much be interpreted as a whole, and Muslims should not pick and choose verses to suit their personal outlook, especially when issuing fatwas.
It goes on to explain that Islam prohibits torture and the killing of innocents or other “people of the Scripture” such as Christians and Yezedis.
The authors also raise issue with how the Islamic State declared itself a Caliphate with the support of only a few thousand extremist supporters, as “it is forbidden in Islam to declare a caliphate without consensus from all Muslims”.
The letter is signed by over a hundred Imams and Islamic scholars form around the world, including from the UK, Egypt, Jordan, Dubai, Morocco, Yemen, UAE, Palestine, Pakistan, Indonesia, Syria, Iraq, the US, and many more nations.
