A former SS soldier has been charged in Germany with the massacre of an entire French village in 1944.
The 88 year-old man, who has not been named, is accused of being part of an elite Waffen SS unit, which killed 642 men, women, and children on a single day. He is accused of being part of a firing squad and helping to blockade a church where dozens of women and children were sheltering, before setting fire to it, killing all those inside.
The man faces 25 counts of murder for his role in the atrocity, but his lawyer says that whilst he admits being at the village at the time, he denies being involved in any killings.
