After months of politicians failing to come to an agreement to bail out Greece, a crowd-funding effort has been launched, calling on European citizens to donate €3 per head and raise the €1.6bn needed.

The organiser of the Greek Bailout Fund project, Thom Feeney, said:

“All this dithering over Greece is getting boring. European ministers flexing their muscles and posturing over whether they can help the Greek people of not. Why don’t we the people just sort it instead?

“The European Union is home to 503 million people, if we all just chip in a few Euro then we can get Greece sorted and hopefully get them back on track soon. Easy.”

In return for their support, backers are offered a variety of perks, ranging from a postcard of Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, to a olive and feta salad, all the way up to a Greek food hamper or a holiday in Athens.

Nearly €90,000 have been raised in the first few hours from nearly 6,000 backers, and there is now just a week to go before the deadline.
