Unmarked pro-Russian troops stormed a Ukrainian air force base in the Crimean city of of Belbek as well as another military base about 30 miles west of Simferopol according to Ukrainian officials.

Shots were fired as the pro-Russian soldiers broke through concrete walls at Belbek, injuring one servcieman, while the Ukrainian forces attempted to use smoke grenades to prevent the attack near Simferopol.

These are the latest in a series of attacks on Ukrainian bases across Crimea since the region voted to join Russia in a referendum last Sunday. Russian president Vladimir Putin has since officially annexed the region into the Russian Federation, despite warnings and sanctions from the US and EU.

Ukraine is also concerned that Russia has moved more troops across the border with eastern Ukraine, another location which, like Crimea, is inhabited by a large number of ethnic Russians and may look to leave Ukraine for Russia.
