Two people have been killed in a “serious incident” on the M1 motorway near Junction 5.

One man fell from a bridge, and when another man stopped and got out of his car to help him, he was struck by a car and killed around 10:45.

A Hertfordshire Police spokesman said:

A number of motorists stopped to assist and subsequently one of these drivers was struck by a vehicle. Both men died at the scene.

The road was closed for a number of hours whilst investigations took place at the scene. Both carriageways are now open.

Both men were carried away by air ambulance, with a spokesperson saying:

We were called at 10.48am, dispatching two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, a volunteer doctor and the Herts Air Ambulance. Our resources were stood down shortly after midday.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the incident to call them on 101 quoting the reference ISR 176 of January 30.
