Heavy rain and strong winds are causing disruption to many people travelling home to see their families for Christmas.

People have been advised against all but “essential” travel, with a number of train companies cancelling services, and the AA warning of likely disruptions on the roads.

The Met Office has issued amber warnings for rain, wind, snow, and ice for the east of England, London and south east England, south west England, and Wales.

The Met Office have also issued yellow warnings for Central, Tayside & Fife, East Midlands, east of England, Grampian, highlands & Eilean Siar, London and south east England, Northern Ireland, Orkney & Shetland, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, south west England, Strathclyde, Wales, West Midlands, Yorkshire & Humber

The stormy weather is a result of a rapidly deepening area of low pressure pushing the storms across the UK, and causing an increased risk of flooding according to BBC weather forecaster Nick Miller.
