A Royal Marine who bit of a pigeon’s head while drunk as a “prank” was traced by police after finding his DNA on the body of the dead bird.
Adam Karmali, 33, had drunk 20 cans of lager during a trip to Cardiff with friends when he picked up the street pigeon and posed for pictures with the birds head in his mouth. He then proceeded to rip the bird’s head off with his teeth and spit it out on the ground, according to the South Wales Evening Post.
A witness to what prosecutor Mike Curry described as a “sickening offence” was so horrified that they called the police, who managed to track down and arrest Karmali from DNA evidence.
Defending Karmali, his lawyer Monique McKevitt told the court that he feels “extreme remorse and shame” for his actions.
Karmali was sentenced to a 12 month community order and must complete 150 hours of unpaid work, but was spared jail as it would end his career.
