Man dies after falling from the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle

A man has died after falling 59m from the top of the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle.

Police were called to the scene at around 19:00 after reports of a man seen walking along the top of the bridge between Newcastle and Gateshead.

The road over the bridge was closed, as police officers tried to talk the man down, but he fell from the bridge into the water below at 19:35.

Emergency services were able to quickly resue him from the river and rush him to a nearby hospital, but he later died of his injuries.

The man has not been formally named.
