A man has been arrested after allegedly stealing a van and driving it the wrong way along the M11 and A14 to escape a police pursuit.

The van joined the M11 at Hastingwood, and drove north along the southbound carriageway for around 50 miles, forcing at least 100 other vehicles to swerve out of the way to avoid a crash.

A police helicopter flew overhead, while police cars gave chase along the northbound carriageway.

The van was finally stopped by crashing into an HGV near Junction 24 of the A14 at Godminster.

The 19-year-old driver of the van has been arrested on arrested on suspicion of aggravated taking a vehicle without consent, dangerous driving, no insurance, no licence and failing to stop for police.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.
