Andy Coulson and Clive Goodman will face a re-trial over allegations that that they bought royal telephone directories from police officers in order to hack the voicemail of members of the royal family.
The former News of the World editor and royal correspondent face charges of conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office.
Goodman pleaded guilty to phone hacking in 2006, while Andy Coulson was found guilty of conspiracy to hack phones last week and faces up to a week in prison.
Coulson’s involvement in the phone hacking scandal has become toxic to Prime Minister David Cameron, who employed him as director of communications despite the allegations. Cameron was forced to make a public apology for his poor judgement in bringing a criminal into Downing Street, but this has not silenced critics that saw Coulson’s employment as a way to gain favour with the Murdoch press.
