Five Dallas police officers have been killed and six wounded by gunmen at a ‘black lives matter’ protest in Dallas, Texas.

Three people have been arrested and a fourth man killed himself in a stand off with police, during which he claimed to have hidden “bombs all over the place”.

A peaceful march was being held in Dallas in protest of the deaths of two black men at the hands of police, Philando Castile in Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Louisiana.

Gunfire broke out at around 20:45 local time on Thursday (01:45 GMT Friday), snipers on rooftops targeting police marshalling the protest.

The attack is the deadliest for US law enforcement officers since the 9/11 terror attack on New York.

The mayor of Dallas, Mike Rawlings, said it was a “heartbreaking moment for the city”, and called on all Dallas residents to “come together” and support the officers and their families.
