Three Turkish soldiers have been killed and eleven more injured after a miscommunication caused a Russian jet to fire on their location in northern Syria.

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent his condolences to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan following the incident, and blamed poor co-ordination between Moscow and Ankara for the accident, reports RIA news agency.

The Turkish soldiers were supporting Syrian rebel efforts to recapture the town of al-Bab from the Islamic State, when a Russian bomb struck their building.

Despite Russia supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Turkey supporting various rebel groups in the Syrian conflict, both countries have formed an uneasy alliance in efforts to target Islamic State.
