An Iranian of dual nationality has been arrested by Iranian authorities on suspicion of spying for the British intelligence services, Iran’s state news agency reports.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, Tehran Prosecutor General Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi claimed the individual had “been active in the economic field, related to Iran…[and]in contact with the British intelligence services”.

Iranian authorities have not named the suspect or their dual nationality.

The suspect is the latest in a series of arrests of dual nationals by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in recent months, including that of British-Iranian charity worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who was arrested at Tehran airport in April as she tried to return to the UK after a holiday in Iran with her two-year-old daughter.

Iran does not recognise the dual nationalities of any of its citizens and prevents foreign diplomatic access to its citizens of dual nationality being detained.
