Iran has accused Saudi Arabia of targeting its embassy with an air strike in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.

Government sources quoted by Iranian state media claim that the embassy was a deliberate target, with the missile strikes resulting in injuries to embassy staff and buildings.

However, later reports in Iran said a missile impacted a few hundred metres from the embassy, and witnesses in Sanaa say there was little direct damage to the main embassy building.

A spokesman for the Saudi-ed coalition said Houthi rebels use abandoned embassies for operations, and the strike that struck near the Iranian embassy had targeted rebel missile launchers.

The strike was one of dozens to hit Sanaa by the Saudi-led coalition, which is battling Houthi rebels in an increasingly deadly civil war.

The missile impact is the latest escalation in tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran following the Saudi execution of a prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr on Saturday.
