A bomb and gun attack on a mosque in Egypt’s northern Sinai region has left at least 235 people dead and more than 80 injured, the state news agency says.

Officials said militants drove up to the al-Rawdah mosque in Bir al-Abed in four off-road vehicles, before setting off an explosive device, storming the mosque, and opening fire of worshippers during morning prayers.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Egypt’s security forces are currently battling an insurgency in the region from the Islamic State affiliated Sinai Province group, but previous attacks by the militants have tended to be directed at military, police, or Christian targets.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has held an emergency security meeting on the attack to determine the country’s response.
