Woolwich Central, the location of a huge Tesco Extra in south east London, has won the dubious prize of being named the “ugliest building in Britain”.

Woolwich Central, which includes 189 apartments in six interconnected blocks rising to 17 storeys over an 7,800m2 Tesco, was named as the winner of the 2014 Carbuncle Cup, a prize that celebrates “the ugliest building in the United Kingdom completed in the last 12 months”.

The building was developed by Tesco subsidiary Spenhill, which was also nominated for its work developing Trinity Square in Gateshead, and judged as the winner of the architectural wooden spoon by a panel that included BD editor Thomas Lane, architectural correspondent Ike Ijeh, BD columnist Hank Dittmar and architect and former RIBA president Owen Luder.
