Construction on Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Tower is to begin next week, which will become the world’s tallest building.

The 200 floor tower near the coastal city of Jeddah will cost £780 million and take five years to complete.

Once it has finished, the 1km-tall building will stand 172m taller than the current record holder, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and be more than three times taller than London’s Shard.

Kingdom Tower is part of a £13 billion redevelopment of Kingdom City, which overlooks the Red Sea, with the construction of commercial centres, housing, shops, and schools.
