Twelve bars of gold were surgically removed from the stomach of an Indian businessman in Delhi after the man was admitted to hospital for vomiting and difficulty defecating.

The 63-year-old man told doctors that he had swallowed a bottle cap after an argument with his wife, but when the surgeons operated on him of 9 April, they found twelve gold bars weighing around 400g in his stomach, which would be worth around £9,500.

After having the gold removed in a three hour operation, the man faced questions from police and customs authorities, according to the BBC, with the smuggling of precious metals on the rise in India after a recent hike in duty.
