A debate between family members as to whether a dress is white and gold or blue and black has gone global after a picture of the fashion item was posted to Tumblr.
Alana MacInnes, of Uist, and Caitlin McNeill, from Colonsay, turned to Tumblr after they couldn’t agree on the colour of a dress.
McNeill asked her followers:
“Guys please help me – is this dress white and gold, or blue and black? Me and my friends can’t agree and we are freaking… out.”
The story quickly went viral, being picked up by fashion bloggers and gossip sites like Buzzfeed.
The #TheDress hashtag became Twitter’s top trending tag and everyone from scientists to Taylor Swift and Kim and Kanye have given their thoughts.
So, what colour is the dress? Blue.
Roman Originals, which sells the dress, offers it in blue/black, white/black, red/black, and pink/black – there’s no gold in there at all.
As Wired explains, that some people see the dress as white and gold is all to do with the background and lighting:
“Photoshop tells us that the places some people see as blue do indeed track as blue. But…that probably has more to do with the background than the actual color”
Photoshop developers Adobe confirm the dress is blue:
