A woman found an severed rat’s head in a bag of frozen spinach she had bought from Asda.

Terri Powis discovered the rat’s face, complete with nose and teeth, in her vegetables as she defrosted them in her steamer.

The 33-year-old office worker said that she was “gobsmacked” when she realised what she had found in the 98p bag of spinach she had bought from her local Asda in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

Asda apologised in a statement, saying:

“We’d like to apologise for any upset cause to Ms Powis and we will work closely with the local authorities whilst they conduct their investigation.”

The rat’s head and remnants of the bag of spinach have been passed to Wycombe District Council, which has said it will investigate the issue in liaison with Asda.

This is not the first time that a rat, or part of one, has been found in groceries from Asda, with a rat found in a jar of gherkins back in 2005.
