An alleged member of the Tongan Crip Gang was shot dead in federal court in Salt Lake City, Utah, after he lunged to attack a witness testifying against him.

Siale Angilau, 25, who was not handcuffed during his trial for racketeering, lunged towards the witness with a pen. A US marshal reacted quickly and fired his weapon at least six times, striking the defendant in the chest.

Angilau was rushed to a local hospital, but later died of his injuries.

A mistrial was declared by US District Judge Tena Campbell after seeing that the incident had left the jurors visibly upset.
