One tourist has been killed and nine others injured in a hot air balloon crash in central Turkey.

The balloon was carrying tourists, mostly from China and Malaysia, when it crashed in the Güvercinlik Valley near Göreme at 08:15 (06:15 GMT) on Wednesday.

The tourist killed in the accident has been identified as Chinese national Tang Yi, with a Malaysian tourist reported to be in a critical condition.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the crash.

Today’s Zaman reports that balloon tours in the Cappadocia region are popular with tourists looking to see the fairy chimneys and ancient architecture.

However, accidents are not uncommon, with three Brazilian tourists dying in a balloon collision in 2013 and a British tourist dying in a crash in 2009.
