South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of the culpable homicide (manslaughter) of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year.

Judge Thokozile Masipa said that the Paralympic star acted “negligently” when he fired shots through the door of his en suite bathroom and killed Steenkamp despite believing “that there was an intruder” in the room.

Pistorius bowed his head and the Steenkamp family wept as the verdict was read out.

Pistorius was also found guilty of negligently handling a firearm that accidentally went off in a restaurant.

Yesterday, Pistorius was found not guilty of murder as Judge Masipa said that the prosecution failed to prove that he intended to kill Steenkamp.

Pistorius faces a jail term of up to 15 years, but is more likely to spend seven to ten years in jail.

The athlete has been granted bail and will be sentenced on 13 October.
