North Koreans appear to have been banned from using the name “Kim Jong-un” in order to protect the supreme authority of the current leader.

According to South Korean broadcaster KBS, before Kim Jong-un came succeeded his father, Kim Jong-il, in December 2011, a state decree was issued ordering anyone sharing Kim Jong-un’s name to change it “voluntarily”.

Parents are also banned from naming their newborns Kim Jong-un as well as “Kim Il-sung” and “Kim Jong-il”, the names of the country’s former leaders, said South Korean news agency Yonhap.
