An Australian teenager has been killed in a shark attack while swimming around the Great Barrier Reef, near Port Douglas.

Daniel Smith, 18, was swimming and spear fishing in the waters at Rudder Reef during a private boat tour with friends when he was attacked by a shark at around 11:30 local time (21:30 GMT).

Smith’s friends immediately alerted the authorities and performed emergency first aid, but he was pronounced dead shortly after the vessel returned to shore, according to Queensland Police.

Sky News reports that Smith received injuries to his right upper leg, groin and upper arm.

Smith is the second shark attack fatality in Australia in the last three months, with a British ex-pat killed while swimming at Byron Bay in September.
