Glasgow police have launched a murder investigation after a violent attack on Christmas Day left one man dead and another fighting for his life in hospital.

Thomas Roberts, 43, suffered serious injuries in an attack near Ashgill Road, in the Saracen area of Glasgow in the early hours of Sunday morning. He was found at around 04:00 and rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary but died a short time later.

A 50-year-old man was also taken to hospital after sustaining injuries in the attack, but he has since been released.

Witnesses told the Daily Record that Roberts screamed for help as a large “bodybuilder” taunted and beat him for half an hour.

Police have been conducting door-to-door enquiries and appealed for anyone with information about the attack to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Livingstone said:

“I am confident there will be people we haven’t yet spoken to who may have heard or witnessed the disturbance.

“I would urge these people to speak to police. A man has lost his life following a sustained attack on Christmas Day and his family and friends have been left shattered.”
