The anxious wait for parents and children across the country will come to an end later today when they find out which primary school they were allocated in the first National Offer Day.

A rising birthrate has put increased pressure on primary school places this year, with more than 100,000 children have applied for places in London alone, and rise of three percent.

A number of schools adding extra classes to cope with the demand, and local councils have called for greater powers in opening new schools to address the rising need.

The majority of applicants will be offered places at their first choice school, but in some areas as many as 8% will not find a place at any of their top three options.

In a survey conducted on Netmums, 46.1% of parents had sent their child into a nursery linked with their preferential school to improve the chances of their child being accepted into the primary school despite the schools adjudicator stating that children should not miss out on primary places for not attending the right nursery.

The survey also found that more than a fifth (21.2%) of parents had bought a house closer to their favoured school, while a further 17% had rented somewhere nearby.
