Dozens of people have been rescued from a flooded supermarket in East Ayrshire after a river broke its banks.

Firefighters helped 42 people escape the water at the Asda store at Queen’s Drive Retail Park, Kilmarnock, after the River Irvine burst its banks, stranding customers inside.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) teams were dispatched to the store shortly after 6:10am when a call from the supermarket reported customers and staff in need of rescue.

The fire service used two rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) to ferry 42 people in what was described as a “safe and orderly rescue”.

No-one was injured as a result of the incident but Scottish Ambulance Service personnel provided precautionary check-ups to those involved.
