An ostrich-sized South American rhea, that is “capable of disembowelling a human” has been loose in the Engllsh countryside for two weeks.

The giant 1.7m tall flightless bird escaped from a farm at Brent Pelham, Herfordshire last month, and has since been spotted by members of the public near the villages of Nuthampstead and Anstey.

The bird can run at speeds of up to 40mph, making it a very difficult animal to catch for the RSPCA staff given the task.

This is the second time this year that a rhea has escaped in the UK, with another being captured and returned to its owner at Tattershall Farm Park, Lincolnshire after being cornered in a garden last month.

The RSPCA has called on anyone that catches sight of the bird to call them with information.
