A Bedfordshire woman has been arrested on suspicion of “preparation of terrorist acts” related to Syria, police have said.

The arrest was carried our by officers from the Metropolitan Police’s SO15 Counter Terrorism Command, and the 25-year-old woman is being held in a London police station.

Officers are searching two addresses in Bedfordshire in relation to the alleged plot.

The arrest comes as Scotland Yards says that their are being “stretched” by an “exceptionally high” number of inquiries into Islamist-related extremism. There have been more than 200 terror-related arrests across the UK in 2014 so far, with 16 people charged with alleged extremist activity in Syria and dozens of British families enlisting the help of police to stop relatives travelling to the Middle East and join the Islamic State.
