Police are investigating a possible “attempted abduction” of a military serviceman outside RAF Marham in Norfolk.

A serviceman, who was not in uniform at the time, had gone for a run when he was approached by two mean between 14:55 and 15:26 at Squires Hill.

The first suspect shouted and attempted to grab him, but the victim successfully fought him off and pushed him to the ground. The second suspect then approached him with a knife, but the victim managed to escape and run off.

The two suspects were then seen driving away from the scene in a dark-coloured people carrier, and have not yet been located.

The victim was not physically harmed.

Norfolk police are investigating the attack as a possible abduction, but the Met Police said anti-terror officers are aware of the incident.

Detective Superintendent Paul Durham, from the Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team, said:

“I can confirm we are treating this as an attempted abduction and detailed enquiries are being carried out at the scene to establish the full circumstances.

“The motivation for the attack remains unclear at this time, and whilst we are currently unable to discount terrorism, there are a number of other possible hypotheses. We are therefore carrying out a thorough investigation to understand what has happened, why and who is responsible.”

Police have increased “visible patrols” around the area to reassure the public in advance of a families day planned to go-ahead at the air base later.
