Eight fire engines and 58 fire fighters are tackling a fire at a recycling plant in east London.

London Fire Brigade were called to a recycling plant on Creek Way in Rainham at 09:27 after 100 tonnes of recycling waste caught fire.

The fire services used water directly from the Thames to fight the blaze, and after two hours, the London Fire Brigade tweeted:

“Smoke has dissipated & no homes are affected.”

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

The fire comes as the London Fire Brigade continues its “Fires are rubbish” campaign, urging people not to dump rubbish on the street as it is a fire hazard and a target for arsonists. More than 8,000 fires are started by rubbish in London each year.
