Nearly 52kg of cocaine has mysteriously disappeared from police headquarters in Paris.

The cocaine had been seized during a number of raids to dismantle a network of drug traffickers across the French capital in July, and France24 reports that was was kept under armed guard at the police headquarters at 36 quai des Orfèvres.

The haul was last seen on 23 July, but was reported as missing by officers on Thursday.

Now, officers from the French internal investigative division l’inspection générale de la Police nationale (IGPN) are searching the buildings with the help of sniffer dogs.

In a statement about the missing drugs, the prefecture said:

“If investigations show that the law has been violated and breaches of ethical rules have been committed, very strong sanctions will be immediately taken.”

This is the second scandal at the famous home of the Parisiene police this, after two officers were charged with raping a Canadian tourist there in April.
